There is more at stake in this election than beating the big orange ugly. In advance of 2020 National Voter Registration Day, L. Joy hosts the 2020 SiriusXM Urban View Vote Special. Coming to the front of the class is Senator Elizabeth Warren and a number of special guests who highlight the many reasons to get engaged, organize and help turn out the vote during the 2020 election season.

Civic Action Homework

  1. Text two (2) friends and/or family members and ask them if their voter registration is up to date.

  2. Talk to two (2) people who may not be “political” and explain to them what’s at stake in the 2020 election and get them registered to vote.

U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren - Representing the Great State of Massachusetts since 2013, Sen. Elizabeth Warren is a former law professor and Presidential candidate who stands for bold solutions and fights for progressive change. She believes in the power of bold, inclusive reform to root out corruption in government and put power in the hands of the people.

Maurice Mitchell is the National Director of The Working Families Party, a nationally-recognized social movement strategist, a visionary leader in the Movement for Black Lives. Maurice worked as a longtime community and political organizer in New York organizing diverse communities.

Leslie Mac is a Brooklyn born & raised activist and a first generation American of Jamaican ancestry who works every day to lift up the voices & experiences of those most affected by racial injustice and white supremacy. She is founder of the Ferguson Response Network and the Founding Chair of the Black Lives of Unitarian Universalism Organizing Collective Board.

Senator Rebecca Saldaña, elected to the Washington State Senate in 2016, represents the 37th District and is a Deputy Leader. She grew up in the Delridge neighborhood of Seattle and has lived and worked primarily in Seattle and Oregon. She has expertise in a variety of areas including worker and immigrant advocacy, transit equity, women’s rights, social and racial justice, civic engagement, affordable housing and sustainable community development.

Senator Kevin Parker was elected in 2002 and represents the 21st Senate District in Brooklyn in the Great State of New York. Sen. Kevin Parker is Chairman of the Committee on Energy and Communications. Senator Parker’s commitment to his community is reflected in his leadership in civic organizations.

Liuba Grechen Shirley ran as a candidate in 2018 to represent the 2nd Congressional District in the Great State of New York. Although she didn’t win, her commitment to women, and particularly moms of young children, who face unique challenges when running for office never waned. She created Vote Mama to help those running for office, especially in those critical early months, moms face increased scrutiny from donors, establishment institutions, and the public.
