Episode 271: Reclaim Your Civic Power
In this episode of Sunday Civics, before she delves into the lesson, L. Joy reflects on her recent trip to South Carolina to participate in Furman University’s MLK Breakfast. She spoke to the group about the importance of reclaiming the power of civic engagement. During her speech, she highlighted the historical and contemporary significance of Black activism, and emphasized that civic engagement must be active, not passive- drawing lessons from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life to inspire action.
As the nation observes both the commemoration of Dr. King and the inauguration of a new president, L. Joy accentuates the stark contrast between these events. She breaks down what is happening before our very eyes- the consolidation of power by the wealthy and influential juxtaposed against King’s fight for a radical redistribution of economic and political power.
Examining the passive celebrations of MLK Day, which is often reduced to service projects, L. Joy calls for a recommitment to the active, radical civic engagement King championed. She urges listeners to move beyond symbolic gestures, build power, and challenge harmful systems at every level—federal, state, and local. She explains that to create equitable communities, listeners need to embrace their roles as change-makers by organizing their communities, demanding policy changes, and holding leaders accountable. This is how we need to honor King’s legacy- through action, not just remembrance. L. Joy concludes the lesson with a snippet from her Furman University speech and again, challenges listeners to reject passive participation, step out from behind the “barricades,” and actively engage in building a more equitable society.
